Here’s an uncomfortable reality.

The consequences of climate change are no longer a distant threat. They’re here now: killing tens of thousands every year, inflicting billions of dollars in damages, and fundamentally transforming how corporations, financial institutions, and governments do business.

We have to adapt to this reality. Retooling our societies to deal with escalating extreme weather events and slow-onset climatic changes will be every bit as challenging, complicated — and exciting — as the global effort to reduce the planet-warming emissions that got us into this mess.

And yet, most climate media continues to focus on the latter.

Of course, covering climate mitigation is important work. But we need a press that doggedly covers adaptation too. Like all transformations, the shift to a climate-adapted world will be messy. Lawmakers will squabble over the “right” policies to harden societies. Investors will spar over where adaptation capital should go. Entrepreneurs will build all kinds of solutions for addressing a warmer and wilder world, and fight for financing, state backing, and public support.

Heated debates will take place. Mistakes will be made. Factions will rise and fall. There has to be a media that tracks and scrutinizes climate adaptation as it unfolds, and holds those leading the charge to account.

That’s why I started Climate Proof — to build a media organization for the adaptation transformation.

You may ask: who am I to be doing this?

I’m Louie Woodall, the founder and editor of Climate Proof. I’ve been a B2B journalist for almost my entire 13-year-career (with a brief sojourn working for a climate tech company). Six years ago, I started covering climate change and the financial system through the newsletter Climate Risk Review, which was read by professionals at the European Central Bank, Federal Reserve, and US Treasury, among many other institutions.

Years writing about climate, business, and finance made me realize there was a massive coverage gap when it came to adaptation. At the time I started this publication, in early 2024, it was also becoming clear that some of the smartest, savviest climate entrepreneurs were pivoting to adaptation — a trend that’s only accelerating.

To do the adaptation transformation justice, though, I believe it’s important for Climate Proof to be a reader-supported publication. Outside investors — whether they be private or non-profit — inevitably shape the substance and tone of a publication (just look at The Washington Post).

While Climate Proof has and will continue to partner with organizations I believe in to produce high-value sponsored content, the majority of our revenue comes from our regular members and Super Proofers.

That’s why I ask all new subscribers to support Climate Proof with a low-cost, monthly ($9) or yearly ($89) membership to our publication.

In return, you’ll get:

✅ Member-only Thursday features on hot adaptation topics

✅ Access to Adaptation10 reports on cool start-ups and adaptation companies

✅ Access to the Climate Risk Signals Explorer

✅ Invites to Climate Adaptation Tech Virtual Roundtables

✅ Podcast transcripts

✅ First look at new editorial & data products

Since you just signed up, I wanted to give you a little extra incentive to take the leap to a full membership and help support independent climate adaptation journalism.

Of course, you can read our Monday newsletter and monthly People Moves columns for free, but as part of this offer, if you subscribe in the next 72 hours, you can get 20% off a yearly membership here.

Thanks for trying out Climate Proof. I hope you enjoy our content.
